During this year’s March Break, the Kingston Frontenac Public Library (KFPL) will host a series of engaging educational programs titled “Cabinets of Curiosity.” From March 11 to March 15, the library plans to host more than 15 distinct events aimed at stimulating the intellectual curiosity of children across various age groups.

Librarian Brianne Peters, specializing in Children’s Services, emphasized the value of these programs, saying, “Participating in library programs during the break is fun and engaging for children and encourages a love of learning and exploration for all ages. With the Cabinets of Curiosity theme, children can discover new things in a welcoming, inclusive environment — and it’s all completely free.”

Due to the anticipated demand and the necessity to manage space effectively, most of the scheduled activities will require prior registration, which commences on March 2 at 9 a.m. Registrations can be made online or by telephone through any library branch, with specific age recommendations provided for each program.

The week’s programming highlights encompass a diverse range of educational and creative activities. These include “Searching for Shipwrecks,” offering STEM-based kits for ages six and above, and “Maple Syrup Math,” a workshop designed to teach children aged eight to 12 about the mathematics of maple syrup production. Additionally, two 3D printing workshops will introduce the basics of this technology to children aged ten and older.

Other activities taking place are “The Ordinary is Extraordinary,” encouraging creative expression through simple materials inspired by Jane Yolen’s book series, and a hands-on exploration of historical artifacts in the “Cabinet of Curiosities.” Children aged nine and above have the opportunity to delve into electronics with “Curious About Circuits,” learning to construct a voice-activated robotic hand, while the “Puppet Show Extravaganza” offers entertainment across various library branches.

Details on these activities and other special events are available on the library’s website, under the Programs and Events section.
