Following the City Council’s approval in December 2023, the Kingston Music Strategy has transitioned from planning to execution. In a collaborative effort, the City of Kingston and Tourism Kingston have established a Music Officer position to spearhead the strategy’s implementation, aiming to foster growth within the local music industry and serve as a bridge between the City and music professionals.

Moira Demorest, who brings over two decades of industry experience, will expand her current role from Music Commissioner to Music Officer within Tourism Kingston. Demorest’s responsibilities will include promoting Kingston’s musical talent, working in conjunction with the City’s Arts & Culture Services department, Tourism Kingston’s Film & Media portfolio, and various community partners.

Expressing enthusiasm about her new role, Demorest stated, “It’s an honour and a pleasure to take on the expanded role of Music Officer, and to have been a part of the creation of the Kingston Music Strategy. Kingston is poised for immense growth in all facets of the music community, from live performances to recording and production, and I’m excited to continue to promote that development.”

In addition, as part of the strategy’s implementation phase, Tourism Kingston and the City are calling for community members to join the Kingston Music Advisory Committee. This committee, consisting of musicians, industry professionals, and community advocates, will guide the strategy’s execution, formulate annual music plans, and address ongoing needs within Kingston’s music scene.

Danika Lochhead, Acting Director of Arts and Culture Services at the City of Kingston, emphasized the importance of community participation, stating, “This is a great opportunity for community members to help bring the Music Strategy to life and shape the future of the music scene in Kingston. Community involvement is a key part of the Kingston Music Strategy and is integral to its success.”

Interested individuals are encouraged to apply by sending a letter of interest to Music@TourismKingston.com by March 29, with the Terms of Reference available on the Tourism Kingston website.

The Kingston Music Strategy aims to enhance support for local musicians and the broader music sector by creating conducive spaces, empowering talent, increasing visibility, and strengthening municipal leadership and backing.
