As International Women’s Day on March 8 draws near, the Kingston community is gearing up to honor the accomplishments of local women.
The Central Branch of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library (KFPL) is set to welcome residents of all ages to the “International Women’s Week Opening Event: Celebrating Kingston Women” on March 4. This special evening will feature a rich tapestry of art, performances, and narratives showcasing strength and resilience.
The lineup of performers for the event includes Inna Leshchuk, a newcomer singer, Sadiqa de Meijer, the Kingston Poet Laureate, and Indigenous hand drummers, promising a diverse range of artistic expression.
In a joint statement, the International Women’s Week organizing committee highlighted the significance of the occasion: “This evening is a testament to the resilience and courage of our community. This is an opportunity to uplift voices, especially those of equity-deserving women and survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. We can foster empowerment for generations by coming together as a community.”
This initiative is a collaborative effort involving various local organizations, including Kingston Interval House, SAC Kingston, Resolve Counselling, Trellis, Kingston Immigration Partnership, Kingston Anti-Violence Advisory Council, Kingston Frontenac Anti-Violence Coordinating Committee, and KFPL, ensuring an inclusive experience for all participants.
The March 4th event schedule is as follows:

- Between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m., the floor will be given to performances and storytelling.
- The evening will conclude with a social gathering from 6:30 to 7 p.m.
