Golf Pro to Hit 1000 Golf Balls for Cancer (Updated)

Published on: 2013/08/27 - in Releases

On Monday September 2nd, Golf Pro J.J. Alexander will be hitting 1000 golf balls on the driving range of Lookout Golf Course near Pelham, Ontario.

This could take him 10-12 hours, but it is no trouble for him, because it is all for a good cause.

Each ball being hit represents $5 from donors. Funds from donors who have sponsored the balls being hit will go toward cancer treatment for Carol Smith.

Carol and William Smith are both long time members of the club. Until her illness recently forced her to leave work, Carol was the Security Dispatcher at Brock University Campus Security, she was previously the Program Administrator of Police Foundations at Niagara College.

Before that she worked on the Green Ribbon Task Force, the same force that solved the murders of Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy. Husband William is a retired NRP veteran with over 31 years of duty.

“They are having a fundraiser for my Mom at Lookout Golf Country Club – the money goes towards paying for her very expensive cancer treatments that aren’t covered by any of our health plans or the government.” said Carol and William’s daughter Ashley. “The Golf challenge is actually really neat – the golf pro at Lookout is going to hit 1000 balls over the course of the day… they are all numbered – its $5 a ball and if J.J. hits a hole-in-one with your ball, you can get $500. If no balls go in, then every ball goes in for the draw.”

Smith has had several surgeries, but her cancer has remained aggressive and continues to attack her body. Her next treatment will be a chemo pill called Gleevec. It is normally used to treat leukemia, but hers has become a cancer of the blood so they are hoping these treatments will provide a miracle.

Because she has a melanoma and not a leukemia, it is not covered by any drug plans or OHIP. These treatments could cost up to $3,000 per month.

Anyone can sponsor a ball for just $5, and if J.J. hits a hole in one with your ball, you could win $500. In the event of multiple hole-in-ones or no hole-in-ones, eligible golf balls will be entered into a draw for the $500 prize.

For more info on how you can sponsor a ball, contact Lookout Point Country Club at 905-892-2631 or Ashley Smith at 905-658-8870.

Balls can be purchased through paypal/ e-transfer at 1000ballchallenge2013@gmail.com.

A ball number will be picked on your behalf. Winner will be contacted.

UPDATE – Itinerary :

J.J. will be starting the morning off at 6:30AM where he will be starting his 10-12 hour job of hitting the 1000 golf balls. Balls will still be available for purchase on the day of the event for those who didn’t get their chance at the $500 or additional donated prizes.

Crafters will be setup from 10:00AM to 3:00PM along the fence of the driving range and 40-50% of proceeds will go to the cause. A Dunk Tank will be setup from 10:00AM to 2:00PM. Members and Staff will take part. It will be 5 balls for $5. A BBQ will run from 11:00AM to 4:00PM. Proceeds of tank and BBQ will of course be going to pay medical expenses.

The event even has a title sponsor. Accelerated Health and Wellness Centre has purchased 100 balls and has donated additional prizes. Clinic Director Patrick Maddalena says “If JJ sinks one of our balls we will donate a $200 gift card and a free 1-hour massage at our clinic. The next person who donates the most will get a 1-hour massage at our clinic.” This is sure to provide extra incentive for generous businesses and individuals.

The day is sure to bring other surprises and the Smith family appreciates all support from the community, friends, and members at the club. Carol and family will be attending from 8:00AM on. This event is open to the public.
