City services and facilities will be affected by the holidays as follows:
GREEN BIN, GARBAGE AND RECYCLING SCHEDULE
There is no Green Bin, garbage and recycling collection on Tuesday, Dec. 25 or Tuesday, January 1. Collection will shift to the day after your regular pick-up day during these two weeks.
REMEMBER: Your household is entitled to put out two untagged bags of garbage on your first collection day after New Year’s Day.
KINGSTON TRANSIT SCHEDULE

– December 24 – Regular weekday service.
– December 25 – No service.
– December 26 – Buses operate on Sunday schedule – except for Route 18, which runs on a Saturday schedule to accommodate passengers at the train station.
– December 31 – Regular weekday service.

– Administrative Offices, including Community and Family Services and Housing on Montreal Street and Provincial Offences: Closed December 25, 26 and January 1.
– Utilities Kingston: Closed December 25, 26 and January 1. In the event of a utility emergency, such as a gas smell or a water main break, call the Utilities Kingston 24-hour number at 613-546-1181.
– Oakwood Day Care: Closed December 25, 26 and January 1.
– Kingston Frontenac Public Libraries: Closed December 23, 24, 25, 26, 30 and 31, and January 1.
– Beechgrove Complex Recreation Centre: Open until 1:30 p.m. on December 24 and December 31. Closed December 25, 26 and January 1.
– Fitness & Wellness Centre at INVISTA Centre: Open until 1:30 p.m. on December 24 and December 31. Closed December 25, 26 and January 1.
– Portsmouth Olympic Harbour – Building: Closed December 25 to 27 and January 1. Marina Office: Closed December 26 to 30 and January 1.
– Arenas: Open until 4 p.m. on December 24 and 31. Closed December 25 and 26 and January 1.
– Grand Theatre Box Office: Open 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. December 24. Closed December 25 through January 2 reopening at noon on Thursday, Jan. 3. Tickets for all shows can be purchased online 24 hours a day at <www.kingstongrand.ca>
– Kingston Area Recycling Centre (KARC)/Norterra Organics: Closed December 25, 26 and January 1. Christmas trees can be dropped off free-of-charge at KARC, 196 Lappan’s Lane or at Norterra Organics at 2069 Joyceville Rd.
HOLIDAY WASTE REDUCTION MESSAGES
Give your gifts a good wrap.
Conventional wrapping paper cannot be recycled because it contains too much coloured ink and dye and is a fire hazard if burned (because it reaches too high a temperature too quickly). That means most wrapping paper is garbage and ends up in landfill. Non-glittery tissue paper is okay to use as it can be disposed of in the Green Bin (please remove tape).
Prefer re-usable or recyclable gift wrap.
Use recyclable or reusable wrap, like re-usable fabric or paper gift bags; brown paper wrapping or newspaper; gift boxes; wrapping that is part of the gift (wrap a small toy inside a new pair of socks or roll a new kitchen gizmo in a tea cloth).
Buy less packaging.
Less packaging means less garbage. Choose gifts with little or no packaging. You can now recycle rigid plastic packaging – the blister packs often used for electronics, children’s toys and hardware – in your Blue Box along with all your plastic food and beverage containers.
Green Bin your leftovers.
Once everyone has had their fill of holiday feasting, toss leftovers in the Green Bin, including: meat and bones, gravy, flour, fruits and vegetables, jams, coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, nuts and shells, eggs, egg shells, bread, butter, cheese, and cake (if you really, truly, don’t want it). Soiled paper products like paper plates, towels, tissues and napkins can go in there, too.
Compost your Christmas tree.
Christmas trees can be dropped off at:
– Norterra Organics – the company that composts the City’s Green Bin contents – at 2069 Joyceville Rd. Please call 613-546-0884 for hours of operation.
– Kingston Area Recycling Centre (KARC), 196 Lappan’s Lane, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Both these facilities are closed December 25, 26 and January 1.
Please: Make sure no tinsel or decorations remain on the tree.
Do not use Christmas trees for firewood. They create a lot of creosote when burned, making them a fire hazard. Locate your Christmas tree safely away from any heat source.
