Multiple Incidents of Strangers Approaching Youth in Kingston

Kingston Police have reported multiple, separate incidents involving Kingston youth who reported being approached by strangers.

Two Teen Females Followed by Male in Vehicle

On October 21, 2013 at approximately 4:15 p.m, a teenage girl noticed a vehicle was being driven slowly and closely behind her as she walked in the area of Cavendish Crescent. The girl, who entered a populated park and sat with some adults, observed the male driver exit his vehicle and walked towards her, but then returned to his vehicle and drove away.

The man was described as Caucasian, approximately 30-40 years of age, short brown hair and wearing a baseball cap. The vehicle involved was black in colour. [KPD RD# 13-32754]

On Wednesday, October 23, at about 3:00 p.m. a teenage girl walking in the area of Brackenwood Crescent also noticed a a vehicle being driven by a male was following slowly and closely behind her.

The man then parked his vehicle, exited, and began to walk towards her. As he approached the girl, he made verbal utterances towards her at which point she ran to a nearby residence for assistance.

The male in this case was similarly described as being Caucasian, approximately 35-45 years of age, with short brown hair, scruffy stubble beard, wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses. His vehicle was described as being maroon in colour and had a baby car seat in the back. [KPD RD# 13-32758]

Student Approached by Van on Yonge Street

On Thursday, October 24 at approximately 8:50 a.m. a Public School student was walking northbound along Yonge Street when a male driver and female passenger slowed down and asked if she needed a ride. The student declined the offer but the van continued to pace her movements, at which point the girl headed towards a house that she knew and the van continued northbound to Johnson Street.

The male driver is described as Caucasian, 30-40s for age, and had white hair. The female occupant is also Caucasian, in her 30s or 40s, with shoulder-length hair, a thin build, and may have pockmarks or blemishes on her face.

The vehicle is described as an older model gray van, with some noticeable dents and rust on it. [KPD RD# 13-32819]

UPDATE – October 31 : According to a Twitter post by the Limestone District School Board, Kingston Police have confirmed that the incident involving this student was a case of mistaken identity (the girl didn’t recognize her neighbours).

Students at East End School Approached by Female

On Friday, October 25, 2013 at approximately 2:00 p.m., three students playing in the bottom half of the École Sir John A. MacDonald Public School yard were approached by an unknown woman. The female, who had her vehicle parked on St. Martha Street nearby, asked the students if they wanted to come to her house for some candy.

The students immediately left the area and the female returned to her vehicle and drove away.

The woman is described as Caucasian, approximately 30 years of age, black hair, wearing black clothes and driving a black sport utility-type vehicle. [KPD RD# 13-32967]

While police do not want people to put themselves in danger, if a licence plate can be seen, please remember it or write it down and pass it along to our Communications staff or the detective. Most registered owners of a vehicle can be traced through a licence plate.

Police are encouraging Parents and guardians to have discussions with their children about personal safety, never accepting rides from strangers, and what to do in such circumstances.
