Queen’s University education professor Larry O’Farrell has been awarded a lifetime achievement award by the American Alliance for Theatre and Education for his international leadership in promoting drama and theatre teaching.
“I am deeply honoured to receive this award, especially as it was supported by such distinguished colleagues from around the world,” says Professor O’Farrell.
The award recognized his achievements in teaching, research and leadership at the national and international levels.
Professor O’Farrell is one of only two UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) chairs in arts education worldwide and has also encouraged national arts education in this country as head of the Canadian Network of Arts and Learning.
Many professors from across North America praise O’Farrell for his dedicated efforts.
“For over 40 years, Larry has made significant contributions to drama/theatre teaching and learning and teacher education,” says Dr. Laura A. McCammon of the University of Arizona in the award citation.
Brock University’s Dr. Debra McLaughlin feels one of Professor O’Farrell’s greatest strengths is his ability to bring people of various backgrounds and nationalities together for a common goal or purpose.
“As an advocate for the arts in education on an international scale, I believe Larry to be in a class of his own,” Dr. McLaughlin wrote in the citation.
The American Alliance for Theatre and Education conference took place recently in Chicago.
