Kingston Fire & Rescue in partnership with Toronto Blue Jays, the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council, and the Ontario Association of Fire Chiefs launched their Swing into Summer Safety campaign at Mother Teresa Catholic School today.
The campaign is designed to educate students and their families about fire safety and other injury prevention tips in the home, cottage and outdoors during the summer.
“Kingston Fire and Rescue is happy to team up with the Blue Jays to increase fire safety awareness this summer,” says Ted Posadowski, Fire Inspector. “Working together we can reduce fire and injury losses and save lives. We encourage you to step up to the plate and hit a home run for your family and community by practicing fire safety.”
Important summer fire safety tips to keep in mind include:
o Just like your home, your cottage or cabin must have working smoke alarms on every storey. It’s the law.
o Allow the ashes from your woodstove or fireplace to cool before emptying them into a metal container with a tight-fitting lid. Store the container outside.
o Make sure the entrance to the cottage has a clearly visible sign indicting the property number so emergency crews can find you.
o Before having a campfire, check with Kingston Fire & Rescue for open air burning restrictions.
o Practice safe barbeque techniques and make sure your barbeque is at least 10 feet away from your house.
o If you plan to celebrate a holiday with fireworks, make sure you follow safety precautions.
o Follow safe handling and storage guidelines for gasoline used in your lawnmower, weed trimmers, chainsaws and outboard motors.
