RELEASE — The RMC Paladins (5-18-1) earned an important win on Saturday night at Constantine Arena, beating the Laurentian Voyageurs (6-16-1) 4-2. With 11 points in the standings, the Paladins need to leapfrog Laurentian with 13 points and Nipissing with 14 to steal the final spot in the OUA playoffs.
Saturday was the RMC Bell Let’s Talk event, promoting the mental health initiative and its upcoming Bell Let’s Talk Day on Wednesday, January 30.
Two minutes into the first period, Paladins captain David Savery (Angus, Ont.) scored from the point in his first game back from injury. With an assist on the goal, Cameron Lamport (Newmarket, Ont.) extended his point-streak to six games.
After Russell Nowry tied the game for Laurentian, RMC’s Bennett Huber (Calgary, Alta.) responded on the power play to give the Paladins the lead heading into the first intermission.
RMC increased their lead when former Kingston Frontenac Liam Murray (Ottawa, Ont.) teed up a rebound to score the Paladins second power play goal of the night with two minutes left in the second period.
After Laurentian made it a one-goal game off the stick of Jarett Meyer, RMC rookie Alex MacDonald (Windsor Junction, N.S.) broke his goalless drought with an important insurance marker. The last time MacDonald scored was in the Paladins previous meeting with the Voyageurs in November.
After a 4-2 win Saturday, RMC is still on the outside looking in with four games remaining on their regular season schedule. The Paladins playoff hopes rest on next weekend’s games, when RMC travels north to play road games against the two teams that sit between them and a playoff berth: Laurentian and Nipissing.
A point or two in the Carr-Harris Cup coming up on Thursday, February 7 would do the Paladins some good before their final contest of the 2018-19 schedule: an all-important home game against Nipissing on February 10.
