Adam Beaudoin is taking the scenic route to Kingston.
The 17-year-old, who will begin his studies in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies this fall, is in the midst of a 4,500 kilometre journey that will end at Queen’s just in time for fall classes.
He’s cycling from his hometown of Victoria, BC to Kingston, and raising awareness and money for cancer research along the way.
“The journey has been extremely challenging and rewarding on several different levels,” he says. “Some days I am completely exhausted and still ride for 160 kilometres plus. Other days I feel great and ride more than 200 km.”
Mr. Beaudoin was inspired to make the journey after a friend was diagnosed with leukemia this year. He’s also watched other friends and family members battle cancer.
He says the challenges of his ride are both physical and mental. One day he biked from Christina Lake to Creston, BC, traveling more than 200 km and climbing 13,000 vertical feet. He is also cycling for up to seven hours a day and is tackling these physical challenges on his own, an experience which has felt isolating at times. His most interesting experience to date? Nearly hitting a black bear in BC.
Mr. Beaudoin’s fundraising goal was initially $10,000, but a generous donor agreed to contribute $5 for every kilometre Mr. Beaudoin rides. The donor will also match the first $23,000 raised. At the halfway point, the trek had already raised more than $20,000.
And while he’s enjoying every moment of the journey, he also has an eye on his destination: the Queen’s campus. He is on pace to reach Queen’s on Sept. 4.
“I am looking forward to Queen’s and all the new experiences that university offers,” he says.
