Queen’s University Moving Forward with Climate Action Plan

Beamish Monroe Green WallQueen’s University is currently negotiating a contract with a consulting firm that will assist the university in its development of a Climate Action Plan (CAP).

“It’s very exciting to be moving forward with a plan that will help guide the university towards our sustainability goals,” says Aaron Ball, Sustainability Manager. “This will be a comprehensive strategy that will involve participation from everyone in the Queen’s community.”

A request for proposals was issued in June 2011 to source consulting assistance for the plan’s development. Six firms responded and the evaluation of the proposals proceeded throughout August and September. The evaluation team consisted of members from the Queen’s Sustainability Advisory Committee, Physical Plant Services and the Sustainability Office.

The firm will work closely with the Queen’s community to create a CAP that includes, among other things: a summary of the current campus greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory; GHG emission projections; academic, research and operations climate action goals; and mechanisms to track progress on goals and actions.

In February 2010, Principal Woolf signed the University and College Presidents’ Climate Change Statement of Action for Canada. This pledge commits the university to engaging in several activities aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and enhancing research and curriculum in the areas of climate change and sustainability. It also requires developing a comprehensive CAP.
