The Canadian Institute of Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR), co-founded by Queen’s and Royal Military College of Canada (RMCC), now has a home in Botterell Hall.

“I think that opening the offices symbolizes a lot of hard work on the part of a lot of key people, but also the commitment that the Canadian academic community has to military and veteran health,” says Alice Aiken, Director, CIMVHR, and an assistant professor in the School of Rehabilitation Therapy.

The institute, which was launched last year after the highly successful 2010 Military and Veteran Health Research Forum hosted by Queen’s and RMC, engages existing academic research resources and facilitates the development of new research, research capacity and effective knowledge exchange in the area of military and veteran health. The institute now includes 18 partner universities from coast to coast as well as several military and veteran organizations.

“The CIMVHR is a unique initiative that brings together some of the best and brightest researchers across Canada, and key stakeholders and partners, in the interest of military and veteran health,” says Vice-Principal (Research) Steven Liss. “We are excited that Queen’s will be the home base for the institute and a meeting place for its members.”

The 2011 Military and Veteran Health Research Forum, hosted by Queen’s and RMC, will be held November 14 – 16 in Kingston. The forum will showcase research with the following themes: mental health; operational and environmental health protection; combat casualty care; physical and mental rehabilitation; transition from military to civilian life; and health care policies and programs.
