This morning, Kingston Transit launched its new Express Service and Routes designed to move riders more efficiently from the west end to the downtown core.
“We are proud to be able to offer 15-minute bus service during the morning and evening peak times and 30-minute service throughout the rest of the day, evening and all day Saturdays and Sundays,” says Mayor Mark Gerretsen. “Offering more frequent service during peak commuting times will make it easier for more Kingstonians to choose this active and green form of transportation.”
Mayor Gerretsen encourages all residents to use the online tool found at kingstontransit.ca/tripplanner to see how they could use public transit to commute to work, school and other regular activities. The Trip Planner is simple to use on any computer or smart phone 24/7.
The launch of this new Express Service – the first of three planned – is the culmination of two years of planning, requiring the addition of 10 buses to the City’s fleet.
“These Routes improve reliability and reduce travel time. We want new riders to get on board Kingston Transit – especially those who live close to the Express Route. Hopping on board public transit not only saves riders money, but is a fantastic way to fit in some walking time and take in some fresh air; overall a healthier lifestyle,” said Sheila Kidd, Director of Transportation.
Kingston Transit’s new Express Routes – 501 and 502 – will make commuting from the west end to downtown Kingston much easier.
Route #501:
- Travels from the Cataraqui Centre along Princess Street, servicing the new Park & Ride at the Kingston Gospel Temple, 2295 Princess St., before heading to the Downtown Transfer Point at Brock and Bagot Streets.
- From the Downtown Transfer Point, it moves along Bagot Street to Stuart Street to Queen’s University/Kingston General Hospital.
- It then continues along King Street toward Portsmouth Avenue at St. Lawrence College and then travels along Front Road, servicing the new Park & Ride at Centre 70 Arena.
- It continues up Days Road, then along Henderson Boulevard turning up Bayridge Drive to Princess Street and returns to the Cataraqui Centre.
Express Route #502 does the same route in reverse.
The new Centre 70 and Kingston Gospel Temple Park & Ride lots, along with the existing ones at the INVISTA Centre and on Montreal Street at Highway 401, all offer free parking to motorists who wish to ride the bus.
