Program Recognizes Households That Divert 75 Per Cent From Landfill

This spring, the City wants to recognize its remarkable recyclers for their good work diverting waste from landfill.

“If your household members think it is about time that their hard work, dedication and recycling know-how got the thumbs-up from the City, then this voluntary program is for you,” says John Giles, Manager of Solid Waste.

Households can register to participate in the Remarkable Recyclers program at www.CityofKingston.ca/remarkable or by calling the City’s Customer Service Centre at 613-546-0000 by March 19.

Ten registered Kingston households will be chosen at random for a free waste audit of their curbside waste. All audited households will receive a waste audit report showing how much waste was successfully diverted from landfill. Audited households that have diverted more than 75 per cent of recyclable waste from landfill will be recognized as “Remarkable Recyclers” with:

  • A specially-marked set of recycling boxes
  • A private tour of the Kingston Area Recycling Centre

In addition, the residents who live in the audited household that diverts the MOST waste from landfill will get a year’s supply of KRAFT paper Green Bin liners and will be recognized in Kingston newspapers during Earth Week, April 15 to 22.

To be eligible, participants must live in a single family home with curbside recycling and garbage pick-up.

Kingston is aiming to divert 65% of residential waste from landfill.

This past fall, Sara Babcock was named Kingston’s most Remarkable Recycler through this program when an audit of her curbside waste showed a 97% diversion rate and 100% recycling capture rate. That means that every bit of household waste that was recyclable was recycled – and that only 3% (measured by weight) of what was collected at curbside was truly garbage.

See www.CityofKingston.ca/waste for more about Kingston’s waste management systems and more ideas on how to waste less and recycle more.
