Kingston to Honour City’s Olympic Athletes

Kingston’s Olympic athletes, who represented Kingston and Canada at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games, will be honoured during a community celebration at the Cataraqui Town Centre on 945 Gardiners Rd. (Centre Court) today, March 21 from 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m.

“Kingstonians watched and cheered with pride as Jayna, Geneviève, Gillian and Mike brought home gold at the Winter Games,” said Mayor Mark Gerretsen. “This event is a homecoming for our athletes and an opportunity for us to celebrate and honour their achievements.”

Of the Canadian athletes at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic, four have ties to Kingston and all made it to the podium, winning gold medals.

• Jayna Hefford Gold medalist, Women’s hockey
• Geneviève Lacasse Gold medalist, Women’s hockey
• Gillian Apps Gold medalist, Women’s hockey
• Mike Smith Gold medalist, Men’s hockey

Mayor Mark Gerretsen, the City of Kingston, and Tourism Kingston invite and encourage everyone to join the celebration of these tremendous athletes. This celebratory event includes a special presentation to the Olympians from Mayor Gerretsen and an opportunity for residents to meet and get autographs from the athletes.

Following the celebration, the athletes will be part of a Kingston Frontenacs’ presentation at the Roger’s K-Rock Centre, 1 Tragically Hip Way, and the game puck drop at 7 p.m.
