Watch for Your Battery Collection Bag in “Kingston This Week”

Published on: 2016/10/25 - in Releases

Look for a special battery collection bag to arrive on your doorstep in this week’s issue of Kingston This Week and use it to collect small household batteries to be put out for collection beside your recycling or other curbside waste containers November 7-12.

“The City, with the help of our recycling collection contractor Progressive Waste Solutions, will be conducting this one-time collection of used batteries to provide residents with a very convenient way to recycle batteries. This program has been successful in many other communities and this year we thought – why not try it out in Kingston! This one-time special collection also reminds people to dispose of used batteries correctly. Batteries are hazardous if the contents are released into the environment and must never go in with your regular garbage,” says Heather Roberts, the City of Kingston’s manager, solid waste operations.

She says people can put their batteries out for that week’s collection in any clear, sealed plastic bag. The best place for the bag is on the ground, right beside your recycling box, but it can also be placed on the ground beside any other curbside waste container where it can be easily seen by a collector. The bag being delivered in Kingston This Week offers a handy reminder of the collection date.

Car batteries and other types of large batteries will not be collected.

The timing of the battery collection was chosen to coincide with the end of Daylight Saving Time on November 6 – a time when Kingston Fire & Rescue urges people to check the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Drop off batteries anytime at one of these locations:
• City Hall, 216 Ontario St.
• INVISTA Centre, 1350 Gardiners Rd.
• Kingston Area Recycling Centre (KARC) at 196 Lappan’s Lane
• Find a list of additional drop-off locations at rawmaterials.com or call2recycle.org.
