Published on: 2012/06/29 - in Releases

As expected, the City’s much-loved Artillery Park Aquatic and Fitness Centre will close to the public this Saturday for approximately 18 months for required renovations and upgrades to this facility.

Current Artillery Park members have been provided with short-term and longer-term options for their memberships during the renovation period. Many members are now enjoying use of the Queen’s University’s Athletics and Recreation Centre for the months of July and August while the City prepares the Beechgrove Complex Recreation Centre at 51 Heakes Lane (off King Street West at Portsmouth Avenue) for use.

Residents are also invited to swim at the Outdoor Aquatic Centre now open seven days a week at the Kingston Memorial Centre, 303 York St. (see www.CityofKingston.ca/waterpark for schedule and admission information).

As of September, programs and services recently found at Artillery Park will be transferred to Beechgrove for the remainder of the expected 18-month construction period. Recreation and leisure program registrations and inquiries will continue to be accepted on-line at www.CityofKingston.ca/ecity and at the INVISTA Centre. Phone numbers and extensions associated with Artillery Park will remain unchanged.

When the Artillery Park facility reopens, members will notice extensive renovations and improvements that will make this community centre more comfortable and accessible.

Shaped with the help of users, the upgrades will include: enhanced mechanical systems with increased hot water capacity, enhanced HVAC systems, new family men’s and women’s change rooms, more lockers, more parking, larger lobby and gathering areas, the addition of a small warm water pool, new fitness and cardio room with separate change rooms, refurbished gymnasium and multi-purpose room, increased in sunlight through-out the facility, and the full-range of accessibility features.
