RELEASE — Inspire climate action in your community by applying to become a Neighbourhood Climate Action Champion. Passionate residents, community leaders and organizations are invited to participate.

Neighbourhood Climate Action Champions will inspire, motivate, and encourage other residents to undertake community-focused actions to support the City’s Climate Leadership Plan. The new program is part of the City’s response to the climate emergency and empowers residents to make change in our community.

“We will help passionate leaders across Kingston guide their neighbourhood to reduce their emissions,” says Julie Salter-Keane, Manager, Climate Leadership. “The goal of the program is to help residents reach our target of carbon neutrality by 2040.”

As part of their role, Champions will plan and lead a climate action project in their neighbourhood to reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions. Potential projects include:

  • Host a waste reduction or cycling workshop
  • Lead a climate change awareness event
  • Organize an energy efficiency workshop
  • Encourage a car sharing program
  • Build a new community garden
  • Create a sharing library

Selected Champions will receive training and a toolkit to help them identity goals and create a plan.

“Climate action requires active participation from everyone. We are looking forward to supporting the innovative ideas brought forward by future Climate Action Champions,” adds Salter-Keane.

Champions will receive up to $2,000 for their project . Individuals and organizations are invited to apply.

Applications for the Neighbourhood Climate Action Champions program will be accepted until 4 p.m. on Oct. 26. Interested community members can register to attend an information session about the program on Oct. 12.
