Women in Canadian Aviation History: Celebrating a Legacy of Trailblazers

Published on: 2023/05/29 - in News

Women have played a pivotal role in shaping the aviation industry for centuries, defying conventions and shattering barriers along the way. From the early days of hot-air balloons and dirigibles to the present, female aviators have left an indelible mark on this male-dominated field. One such trailblazer, Lola Reid Allin (pictured), has persevered through societal expectations and is now celebrated for her achievements.

Allin, a pilot, flight instructor, and commercial aviator boasting over three decades of experience, defied the notion that flying was a pursuit reserved only for men. Her fascination with aviation began as a young girl, captivated by the awe-inspiring aerobatic displays of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s Golden Hawks.

Undeterred by discouragement from her parents, who dismissed her aspirations with the remark, “Don’t be silly; only men can be pilots,” Allin fearlessly pursued her dream and acquired her pilot’s license. Today, she stands as a testament to the success that can be achieved in the face of adversity. In addition to her accomplishments as an aviator, Allin is a world traveler, an acclaimed author, and an award-winning photographer.

On June 10, Allin will deliver a compelling talk on women’s history in aviation, highlighting the achievements of the Ninety-Nines: International Organization of Women Pilots. The highly-anticipated event will take place at the Isabel Turner Branch from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Those interested in attending can register online starting from Saturday, May 27, or by phone at (613) 549-8888.

“From balloonists to barnstormers, bush pilots to space shuttle pilots, women have been an integral part of aviation history for over 225 years,” stated Anne Hall, Local History and Heritage Librarian. “Through Lola’s inspiring journey and expertise, she will empower and motivate girls and young women, showing them that their dreams can indeed take flight.”

The event promises to be an enlightening and empowering experience, as Lola Reid Allin shares her remarkable story and highlights the significant contributions of women in aviation throughout history. Attendees will have the opportunity to gain valuable insights and draw inspiration from a true pioneer in the field.
