KFPL to Update Patron Code of Conduct Policy with Community Input

Published on: 2024/07/08 - in News

This summer, the Kingston Frontenac Public Library (KFPL) is undertaking a thorough review and update of its Patron Code of Conduct Policy. The initiative aims to ensure that the revised policy reflects the diverse needs and values of the community, enhancing the experience for all library users.

“Our mission at KFPL is to build and support community by creating inclusive spaces, services, and collections that advance literacies and invite people to innovate, learn, explore, and connect,” said Laura Carter, Chief Librarian/Chief Executive Officer. “Updating our Patron Code of Conduct Policy is crucial to this mission. By involving the community in this process, we aim to ensure that our library remains a vibrant and welcoming place for everyone.”

The library’s commitment to providing safe and welcoming spaces is underscored by the Patron Code of Conduct Policy, which ensures that these spaces remain comfortable and inclusive. Community feedback from surveys and engagement sessions will inform the updates to this policy, helping the library make data-informed decisions. The updates will also consider health and safety requirements for both staff and patrons.

Community members are encouraged to participate in the KFPL Patron Code of Conduct Policy Survey. The data collected from this survey will be reviewed by the KFPL Code of Conduct Working Group and will inform potential changes to the policy. Participants will have the chance to enter a voluntary random draw for a $50 gift card to their preferred coffee shop.

In-branch pop-up engagement sessions will provide additional opportunities to discuss the policy update with KFPL staff. These sessions are scheduled as follows:

  • Wednesday, July 3, from 1-3 p.m. at the Central Branch
  • Thursday, July 4, from 2-4 p.m. at the Sydenham Branch
  • Tuesday, July 9, from 12-2 p.m. at the Rideau Heights Branch
  • Wednesday, July 10, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the Isabel Turner Branch

The first draft of the updated policy will be reviewed at a Library Board meeting in September. Further community engagement on the draft policy is planned for October, with final approval anticipated at a Library Board meeting in November.

KFPL will post updates on its website, social media channels, and in the Engage newsletter to keep the community informed about the project’s progress. For more information or to share thoughts directly, email engage@kfpl.ca.
