City Seeks Input on New Cart-based Waste Collection System

The City of Kingston is calling on its residents to share their thoughts on the proposed shift to a cart-based waste collection system.

The survey, part of the city’s effort to gather public input, is accessible through Get Involved Kingston until February 9 at 4 p.m. This initiative marks a significant change from the current manual garbage collection method, aligning with the broader industry trend towards automated systems, which reduce the risk of injuries such as back strain and falls among waste collectors.

Public Works and Solid Waste Director Karen Santucci emphasized the city-wide impact of the transition, urging residents to contribute their preferences regarding cart sizes and collection frequencies. “This program will affect residents across the city, so it’s important that people have their say to ensure a smooth and successful transition,” said Santucci.

Residents can participate in the survey online or provide feedback by phone at 613-546-0000, Monday to Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, during regular business hours or emailing WasteStrategies@CityofKingston.ca. The insights gathered will guide the City Council in formulating an effective strategy for implementing the cart-based system, slated to commence in the summer of 2025.

In addition to participating in the survey, Kingston residents are encouraged to download the Kingston Waste app, offering convenient access to garbage and recycling schedules and reminders.
