Call2Recycle Canada, Inc. has announced South Frontenac Township as the recipient of its 2023 Leader in Sustainability Award. This accolade is awarded annually to entities demonstrating outstanding commitment to environmental preservation and responsible battery management practices.
In the year 2023, with the active participation of its residents, South Frontenac Township succeeded in collecting and diverting 2,310 kilograms of batteries from landfill disposal. This achievement positioned the township as one of the top-performing partners in the program. The program itself witnessed a 32% increase in collections across Canada in 2023, successfully diverting close to 6 million kilograms of batteries from landfill sites.
Kyle Bolton, Director of Public Services, commented on the achievement, stating, “These are outstanding results. Batteries that are disposed of in landfills can leak toxic materials, contaminate the environment, and affect wildlife. I’d like to thank the residents of South Frontenac for caring enough to do the right thing and recycling their batteries safely.”
The Township operates a Household Hazardous Waste Depot at 2491 Keeley Road. During the winter months, it is open from 3-7 pm on the second and fourth Thursday, and weekly on Thursdays from 3-8 pm for the remainder of the year. This facility accepts single-use and rechargeable dry-cell household batteries up to 5 kg each for recycling purposes.
In an effort to further encourage recycling and waste diversion from landfills, the Township introduced the South Frontenac Recycles app in 2022. This application assists residents in remembering collection days and provides a Waste Wizard feature to look up recyclable items, among which batteries have been a frequent search.
Joe Zenobio, President of Call2Recycle Canada, Inc., praised the collaborative efforts stating, “Each year, Canadians recycle more and more of their used batteries thanks to the ongoing partnership of organizations like South Frontenac Township who are setting high standards for waste diversion and environmental excellence.”
