This past week, the South Frontenac Township Council announced it has approved its budget for the year 2024, which includes a 2.74% increase in the Total Operating and Capital Budget, amounting to $44,553,398 million. This increase translates to an additional $47.04 annually for the average household, based on an assessment value of $278,126.

The budget focuses on essential areas such as road and bridge infrastructure, facility and fleet upgrades, recreational programming and events, technological advancements, climate change initiatives, an economic development strategy, and a transportation master plan. Notably, the 2024 Budget includes a tax requisition of $22.4 million and a transfer from reserves of $16 million, supplemented by grants, user fees, and permits.

A survey conducted to gather resident feedback on the budget received 564 responses. A majority, 70%, indicated a preference for a reasonable increase in property taxes to either maintain or enhance services, with particular emphasis on roads and emergency services as critical operational and capital projects.

Mayor Ron Vandewal commented on the budget, stating, “We heard from our residents that a reasonable increase of under 3% would be acceptable to maintain or enhance or services. We’ve listened to their feedback and the 2024 Budget focuses on maintaining our current levels of service while also incorporating some enhancements so we can continue to grow and provide the services our residents are asking for.”

Key budget highlights include an operating budget of $26,792,892, a capital budget of $17,766,740, significant investments in fleet replacement for Fire and Public Services, road reconstruction projects, Town Hall expansion, and funding for climate change initiatives.

In its 2024 programming, South Frontenac aims to offer swim and day camps at three locations, including a new site at McMullen Beach in Verona.

The budget takes into account inflationary pressures such as rising wages and increased costs for materials and services. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in October 2023 was at 3.1%, compared to significantly higher rates in previous years.

The budget aligns with the Township’s long-range financial plan, considering a 10-year period for funding capital and operational needs.

The final budget documents are now available for public review on the Township’s public engagement site.
