Utilities Kingston is dvising residents to take preventive measures to protect their homes from basement flooding as seasonal weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable.
The effects of climate change—such as increased temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, more frequent extreme weather events, and rising sea levels— have already made an impact and homeowners are encouraged to prepare for spring conditions that may place additional stress on aging infrastructure.
“Any basement can flood, even if it’s never happened before. With unpredictable weather on the rise, taking action now to protect your home is crucial. Simple steps can make a big difference in preventing damage when heavy rain is in the forecast,” says Robert Bowen, Supervisor, Inspection & Support for Utilities Kingston.
Among the most effective steps recommended is the installation or upgrading of a sump pump. Sump pumps are used to move excess water away from a building’s foundation, reducing the risk of structural damage. This is particularly relevant in older neighbourhoods where existing drainage systems may not be designed to manage current levels of rainfall.
Homeowners are also advised to inspect eavestroughs and downspouts for blockages or damage resulting from winter conditions, ensuring they are clear and functioning properly. Downspouts should discharge water at least two metres from the foundation to prevent water from pooling near the structure.
Reducing runoff through the use of rain barrels is another method cited, as it helps divert water from the sewer system and lowers the potential for sewer overflows.
Utilities Kingston emphasizes the importance of safety in the event of basement flooding, stateing that homeowners should not enter a flooded area unless it has been confirmed safe by a qualified professional.
