The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks’ Nicole Escano (above) was recognized earlier this week for her stellar hockey season by Ontario University Athletics (OUA).

The OUA freshman from Kingston was named to the all-rookie team on Monday after leading the Ridgebacks defence in scoring – posting eight points (3G, 5A). According to a release, Escano’s output was enough to finish 14th in league scoring among defenceman, while she was the second highest scoring rookie defenceman in the league.

Escano joins Jill Morillo as just the second skater, and fourth player overall, from Ontario Tech women’s hockey program to be named to the all-rookie team, with Cassie Charette and Tori Campbell rounding out the group.

She was joined in being honored Monday by Natalie Wozney of Whitby, Ontario who was named a first-team all-star. Wozney came to Ontario Tech after two years playing in the NCAA and on offence led the Ridgebacks team in both goal scoring (11) and overall points (23).

The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks are the athletic teams that represent University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.
