The City of Kingston has announced the return of its Neighbourhood Tree Planting Program (NTPP), offering residents the opportunity to purchase discounted trees to beautify their properties and contribute to the expansion of the city’s tree canopy. This annual initiative aims to encourage local homeowners to invest in their surroundings, thereby fostering a greener community.
Troy Stubinski, Public Works Operations Manager, highlighted the multifaceted benefits of tree planting, stating, “Purchasing and planting a tree has many benefits for individual property owners and Kingston as a whole. Trees provide shade, store greenhouse gases, give off oxygen, help remove pollutants from groundwater and help prevent soil erosion. They do many important jobs, and all while beautifying our community and promoting wellbeing for all.”
The program offers a selection of eleven different tree species, with the sales window open from March 1 to April 1. Availability is based on a first-come, first-served policy, subject to stock levels. Eligible city residents can purchase up to three trees per property at the subsidized cost of $20 each, HST included.
To participate, residents can place their orders through the city’s website, over the phone, or in person at designated City locations. For more information and to order, individuals are encouraged to visit CityofKingston.ca/NeighbourhoodTrees.
Additionally, those interested in learning more about Kingston’s forestry efforts and the objectives behind the expansion of the city’s tree canopy are invited to listen to the forestry episode of “Tell Me More,” the City’s official podcast.
