In a statement released this week, Kingston Mayor Mark Gerretsen offered his congratulations to Kathleen Wynne, the new Premier Designate of Ontario.
Wynne, who was elected to lead the Liberal party on Saturday, became the first female and first openly gay premier of Ontario.
The Mayor’s message to Wynne, who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Queen’s University in the 1970s, was as follows:
I want to congratulate Member of Provincial Parliament Kathleen Wynne on being elected as the Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party and Ontario’s 25th Premier this past weekend.
As a former Minister of Municipal Affairs, Ms. Wynne has a good understanding of the issues and challenges facing Ontario municipalities.
As MPPs return to the Ontario Legislature on February 19, I look forward to working with Ms. Wynne in the weeks/months to come on Kingston’s priorities.
Moving forward, we are committed to seeking investment on a few big infrastructure projects like the Point Pleasant Water Treatment Plant and the expansion of John Counter Boulevard and will continue to work with the province on sustainable municipal funding options, including changes to the Heads and Beds levy. We also look forward to the continuation of the Provincial-Municipal upload agreement.
