Limestone District School Board teachers have been recognized in two separate award presentations, as was QECVI high school in Kingston.
Mike Byers was the recipient of this year’s Wess Garrod “Healthy Active Living” Award. The First Avenue public school teacher is a driving force behind the school’s physical fitness program, and recognized for his work across the Limestone District School Board.
Some of the activities, sports and attributes Byers brings to the physical education and training of his students includes:
- coordinating tournament dates for all the sports and acting as liaison to other coaches on staff,
- coaching Cross-Country, Track and Field and Boys Basketball,
- organizing the “TV turn-off” program and special events promoting healthy active living at school,
- coordinating “Jump Rope for Heart”,
- and led several related workshops for teachers across the district.
The Wess Garrod HEAL Award was founded when Supervising Principal Garrod retired from the school board, and is presented annually to one employee of the LDSB who has contributed in a variety of ways to the promotion and improvement of Healthy Living for All.
Limestone teacher selected as best in province
A teacher at Sydenham High School and a secondary school have been selected as “best in the province” by Teacher Candidates of the Faculty of Education at Queen’s University.
The recipients are selected from approximately 1,500 Associate Teachers and 200 schools from across Ontario.
Mike Mol, of Sydenham High School, and Queen Elizabeth Collegiate and Vocational Institute, were selected at the 2009-2010 Associate Teacher and School of the Year, respectively. The award is in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the Faculty of Education, Queen’s and their Teacher Candidates.
These awards are presented each year by the Queen’s Practicum Office of the Faculty of Education to recognize Associate Teachers and schools whose programs and mentoring are exemplary, and whose commitment has resulted in excellent practica placements for teacher candidates.
