The Kingston Frontenac Public Library – in partnership with Sustainable Kingston – is offering a new One Earth series focusing on climate, sustainability, and energy efficiency. Through this initiative, energy professionals from Sustainable Kingston and a representative of Little Forests Kingston will present a range of strategies for reducing home utility and repair costs while positively impacting the environment.
The series addresses multiple aspects of home energy use, covering topics such as basement and foundation energy modifications, attic insulation, home retrofitting, and alternatives to traditional landscaping. Attendees will also learn about the Better Homes Kingston program, designed to support homeowners in implementing energy-saving measures.
Olivia Kamphorst, Librarian, Programming and Outreach, emphasized the environmental benefits of making small, impactful changes at home. “Many routine practices of powering, heating, cooling and landscaping around our homes are detrimental to the environment,” she said. “There is no time quite like the present and therefore, no better time to make small changes within our own homes that will yield positive environmental outcomes. There are many ways to make a difference; even transforming an urban grass lawn into an oasis for wildlife and pollinators where wildflowers, trees, and shrubs are allowed to grow undisturbed, will have tremendous impact.”
The series will take place on Monday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., beginning on October 29 and running until November 26. Admission is drop-in and will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Locations will vary among Kingston Frontenac Public Library branches as well as the Kingston East and Rideau Heights community centers.
Further details on session locations are available through the Kingston Frontenac Public Library’s One Earth series page.
