Kingston politicians have sent their condolences and prayers to the victims, survivors and community of yesterday evening’s shooting in a Quebec City mosque.

Mayor Bryan Paterson echoed those same sentiments, adding that “#ygk (Kingston) stands with you”. The mayor also retweeted a post announcing the Vigil against Islamophobia scheduled for tonight.

Mark Gerretsen, Federal Member of Parliament for Kingston and the Islands tweeted shortly after news of the shooting, sending his thoughts to the Quebec City community of Ste-Foy where the mosque is located.

Gerretsen reiterated Kingston’s support for the Muslim Community and wrote that he is returning to Kingston to attend this evening’s vigil.

The vigil against Islamophobia is scheduled to take place from 7 pm until 10 pm in Springer Market Square behind City Hall.

The Facebook event page states:

We will be remembering the victims of the cowardly attack on the Islamic Cultural Centre in Quebec City. May the victims rest in power, may they find healing, and may they find strength.

We will declare that hatred, bigotry, and islamaphobia cannot be tolerated in any form.

This vigil is planned to coincide with the mass vigil in montreal tomorrow, thousands will be remembering the lives lost, and standing in opposition to islamophobia. We hope that many thousands more will join us across the country to condemn this hatred.
