Free Trips Across LaSalle Causeway During Sidewalk Closure

Published on: 2019/04/24 - in News

Kingston Transit reports that during regular service hours it will be providing free trips across the La Salle Causeway while the Ontario Street sidewalk near the causeway is closed.

The section of sidewalk on Ontario Street, stretching between The Tragically Hip Way and the east side of the Causeway, is closed due to safety concerns related to sections of the wall around Fort Frontenac that are in need of urgent structural repair.

The bus stop located on the east side of Ontario Street in front of the Wolfe Island Ferry Terminal can be used by pedestrians who are heading east towards Royal Military College, while those heading west toward the downtown can use the bus stop located on the north side of Highway 2 at Royal Military College/Fort Henry Drive. Signage for this service will be set up around the sidewalk closure and at the transit stops.

The Department of National Defence and the City are working to create an alternate route for pedestrians that will allow the wall to be repaired in sections and Kingston Transit will offer the free rides across the Causeway until that alternate route is established.

Proposed changes during the repairs is to shift existing vehicles lanes to the west initially while adding a protected pedestrian pathway to the east side. Details about the final setup will be provided to the public once they have been decided.
