The Kingston Economic Development Corporation (KEDCO) has announced that the “Summer Company” program is open for business.

Students between the ages of 15 and 29 years old are eligible to receive grants up to $3,000 to begin their own business. This Government of Ontario sponsored program will be administered in the Kingston area by KEDCO’s Entrepreneurship Centre. Successful candidates will also receive one-on-one business training as well as being matched with area business mentors.

“We are looking for students with a great business idea,” said Jan Dines, Manager of The Entrepreneurship Centre at KEDCO. “You’ll receive start-up funding to run your business, while learning new skills all within a supportive environment.  It will be the most exciting and rewarding summer job you’ve ever had.”

A number of successful small businesses have gotten their start through the Summer Company program in Kingston.  In a media release, KEDCO highlighted Zach King-Beland’s small property maintenance business last year that provided lawn care services including mowing grass, painting and doing odd jobs.  With the development of a viable business plan, he demonstrated how to implement his business and significantly profited from it during the summer.

Another exceptional participant of the Summer Company program mentioned in the release is Megan McFarland, who ran a swimming camp ‘with a high degree of business professionalis’m from her backyard pool. The student reportedly earned a high level of sales while providing private and group swimming lessons for a customer base ranging from toddlers to adults.

Applicant spaces for Summer Company 2012 are very limited and interested students can visit for more information on eligibility and program requirements, or to fill out an application. Other past success stories can be viewed on the Entrepreneurship Centre’s Current Companies webpage.
