Kidney Walks Unite Ontario Communities for Annual Fundraiser

This September, communities across Ontario will come together for the annual Kidney Walk, a signature fundraising event organized by The Kidney Foundation. The event serves as a platform for supporters to unite in support of individuals with kidney disease, celebrate transplants, honor loved ones lost to the disease, and connect with others sharing similar experiences. The Kidney Walks play a crucial role in raising funds for The Kidney Foundation’s programs and research initiatives.

“Last year’s Kidney Walk raised a record-breaking one million dollars,” said Mary-Pat Shaw, President of The Kidney Foundation’s Ontario Branch. “Kidney Walks are our signature event, and this year is particularly meaningful as we also celebrate the 60th anniversary of The Kidney Foundation of Canada.”

Founded 60 years ago by a group of dedicated individuals, The Kidney Foundation was established to fund kidney research and increase awareness of a disease that was then poorly understood. While advancements have been made, kidney disease continues to affect 1 in 10 Canadians, with millions more at increased risk.

This year, the Air Canada Foundation is participating in the celebration with a special contest. From August 7, 2024, to September 30, 2024, participants who raise $100 or more online will automatically be entered into a draw to win a voucher for two economy class return tickets to any Air Canada scheduled destination.

Currently, over 12,000 Ontarians rely on life-sustaining dialysis treatments several times a week, with many awaiting kidney transplants. Although transplantation offers the best outcome for patients with end-stage kidney failure, it is not a cure, and there remains a shortage of organ donors.

Individuals living with kidney disease encounter a range of emotional, financial, and physical challenges. The funds raised through the Kidney Walks are essential in supporting The Kidney Foundation’s mission. “From funding world-class research, providing education and resources, peer support, and financial assistance, The Kidney Foundation is with Canadians for every step of their kidney disease journey,” said Shaw. “We are incredibly appreciative of our Walk participants and donors who help us achieve these goals.”

The Kidney Foundation acknowledges the support of its national partner, Otsuka Canada Pharmaceutical Inc., national supporter Amgen Canada, media sponsor Yes TV, and prize sponsor the Air Canada Foundation for their contributions to the Kidney Walk.
