The City of Kingston, in collaboration with Sustainable Kingston and various community partners, is extending an invitation to citizens to embrace alternative modes of transportation during the upcoming Commuter Challenge. The initiative encourages individuals to walk, run, roll, or ride to work as a means of fostering a greener environment and a more vibrant city.

Mayor Bryan Paterson emphasizes the significance of the Commuter Challenge as an opportunity for the community to unite and generate a positive impact on the environment. “By opting for active and sustainable transportation options, we can minimize our carbon footprint and create a healthier, more livable city,” states Mayor Paterson.

The Commuter Challenge is an annual nationwide campaign, running from June 4 to June 10, designed to motivate individuals and organizations to reconsider their commuting habits and “test drive” active transportation or public transit for one week. The campaign coincides with Canadian Environment Week and immediately follows Cycling Week, which commences on June 3.

Geoff Hendry, the Chief Operating Officer of Sustainable Kingston, highlights the significance of active transportation as a formidable climate action strategy. “By choosing to walk, run, roll, or ride, we are taking tangible steps towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change,” Hendry asserts. “Join your neighbors, friends, and coworkers next week to discover new ways to commute and explore your community.”

To inaugurate the challenge, Sustainable Kingston has partnered with Kingston Community Health Centre, Cycle Kingston, and Kingston Pathways to Education. They will be hosting a Roll-In Breakfast on June 5, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., at 263 Weller Avenue. This event aims to acquaint residents with active and sustainable transportation options while providing complimentary coffee, tea, and pastries.
