The Kingston Frontenac Public Library (KFPL) is inviting the community to provide feedback on its Draft Patron Code of Conduct Policy. During the spring and summer of 2024, the library initiated a series of public consultations led by an internal Working Group. These consultations involved community, staff, and Library Board surveys, as well as engagement sessions aimed at gathering input to inform updates to the existing policy.
The recommended revisions are the result of feedback collected through these engagements, combined with a review of internal incident reports, best practices from other libraries, and compliance with Health and Safety regulations. According to Laura Carter, Chief Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of KFPL, “Library and community needs have changed, and our intention was to listen to the community and staff to create a draft policy that reflects those changes. We endeavour to be responsive to patrons’ needs while fulfilling our health and safety obligations as an employer.”
KFPL, which offers free and equitable access to services and collections to support literacy and foster innovation, has outlined expectations for the use of library services and spaces in the Draft Policy. The proposed guidelines apply across all areas where the library conducts its activities—on library premises, in the community, via phone or email, or online. The Draft Policy, alongside other library policies, aims to support KFPL’s mission of building and maintaining inclusive, welcoming, and safe spaces for all.
The Library Board reviewed the Draft Policy and Public Engagement Report on September 25, 2024. Prior to its final approval at the November Board meeting, the KFPL is seeking further community input.
Members of the public are invited to share their suggestions through email at engage@kfpl.ca by October 25, or attend pop-up feedback sessions on Thursday, October 15, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Central Branch, and on Thursday, October 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Isabel Turner Branch.
