“In From The Cold” Expands Capacity to Address Winter Homelessness Demand

Kingston’s In From The Cold (IFTC) emergency shelter, operated by Home Base Housing, has increased its capacity from 24 beds to 34 beds to accommodate growing demand during the cold winter months. The expansion is part of the shelter’s ongoing efforts to provide safe and supportive accommodations while helping individuals transition into stable housing.

Operating 24/7 throughout the year, IFTC offers a range of services, including three daily meals, access to shower and laundry facilities, and pet-friendly accommodations. Clients are paired with case managers who assist in securing permanent housing, emphasizing the shelter’s mission as a housing-focused facility.

In 2024, IFTC housed 64 individuals, transitioning them from the shelter into their own homes. The facility operated at 88% capacity during the year, reflecting the persistent need for its services.

A current resident in his 30s commented on the importance of the increased capacity, saying, “By increasing capacity, it will help more people get on their feet and get their life back on track.” He also described the shelter’s daytime operations as “essential,” providing not only a warm bed at night but also resources and support to secure housing.

Ryan Powers, IFTC Supervisor, remarked on the expansion, saying, “Expanding our capacity by 10 beds is a direct response to the growing need for shelter in our community, especially during the winter months. This means more individuals will have access to a safe place and the support they need to regain stability in their lives.”

For more than 30 years, Home Base Housing has worked to address homelessness in Kingston, offering services including emergency shelters, transitional housing, and supportive housing. The expansion of IFTC underscores the organization’s continued commitment to supporting individuals in achieving housing security and long-term stability.
