The Youth Advisory Committee of the Community Foundation for Kingston & Area (CFKA) was honored by the Limestone District School Board, who recognized their support of Limestone schools through the CFKA’s Fall 2010 Kickstart Grants.

Kickstart is a bi-yearly grant competition available to all elementary school classes in the Limestone and Algonquin and Lakeshore school boards. Applicants submit small class projects that will engage youth with the community while also fostering community pride.

This semester’s projects funded by CFKA include:

$400 to Enterprise Public School to build Log Cabin Birdfeeders

An artist-run workshop will have grades 3 & 4 students building and installing three log cabin birdfeeders at school and in their community. This project will be part of their study of habitats and also ties into Character Education themes of Environment and Citizenship. The community will be invited to be a part of the special installations.

$300 to Lord Strathcona Public School to perform Beauty and the Beast (Debut)

Four performances of a musical production of Beauty and the Beast will be made vy students from grades JK to grade 3. The play will promote the school’s character education program and foster a sense of community – in part by allowing ticket costs to be kept low, thus enabling larger participation from the school’s diverse community.

$200 to Marysville Public School towards Tech Tools for Kids

Teachers for grades 4/5 and 6 to 8 will instruct students in woodworking projects. These projects enable skills that are highly valued within the Wolfe Island community –  a highly “do-it yourself” population that can especially benefit from having knowledge and skills in woodworking.

In the spring of 2011, CFKA’s Kickstart grant competitions will grow to include all high schools and private schools within Kingston & surrounding Area .
