City Offers Discounted Backyard Composters for Residents

The City of Kingston is once again offering a special promotion for residents to purchase backyard composters at a discounted price of $30 during the month of May, while supplies last.

Residents can take advantage of this opportunity by visiting the Kingston Area Recycling Centre (KARC) at 196 Lappan’s Lane. The KARC is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Proof of residency is required, and there is a limit of one composter per household.

“Composting in your backyard is a great way to capture the nutrients in organic waste for use in your garden or on your lawn,” says Adam Muller, Supervisor of Solid Waste Disposal.

The City’s green bin program collects organic waste, which costs approximately $100 per tonne to process. Backyard composting not only saves municipal dollars but also reduces greenhouse gas emissions related to collection vehicles.

Certain items, such as bones, dairy products, fats, and oils, are not suitable for backyard composters. For more information on acceptable items, visit CityofKingston.ca/GreenBin.

The discounted price will end on June 1 or when 100 composters have been sold, whichever comes first, and will return to the standard price of $54.
