The City of Kingston has commenced an investigation and response following the discovery of numerous deceased and unwell Canada geese at Lake Ontario Park and Elevator Bay. City personnel, having noted signs of illness and the presence of approximately 30 dead birds, are coordinating with provincial and national wildlife health authorities.
While the precise cause of the avian fatalities is yet to be determined, the City urges residents to report observations of distressed or deceased birds. Reports can be directed to the Ontario Regional Centre of the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at 1-866-673-4781 or through the online platform. The Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre at (613) 354-0264 is also available to receive reports of birds in distress.
The City has informed the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC) about these incidents. The CWHC is conducting tests and is expected to provide results in the forthcoming two weeks.
Efforts to clean the affected areas are in progress, with city staff following recommended safety protocols for carcass disposal. The City remains vigilant, continuing to monitor local waterfront parks and manage the situation as required.
Residents are advised against handling sick, injured, or deceased wildlife. In instances where contact is unavoidable, it is recommended to use protective gloves or doubled plastic bags, and to ensure hands are thoroughly cleaned afterward. Pet owners are reminded to keep cats indoors and dogs leashed during walks to prevent potential contact with affected wildlife.
