This holiday season, Ontario’s Nature Network, comprising over 52 groups, is leading a series of Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs), part of North America’s longest-running wildlife census which began in 1900. These counts, inviting bird enthusiasts of varying expertise, are set to celebrate the 124th CBC across Ontario from December 14, 2023, to January 5, 2024.
Interested participants can locate a nearby Nature Network count through the Ontario Nature website or access a complete list of nationwide counts at the Birds Canada website.
The Nature Network group counts provide an engaging opportunity to learn about birds and contribute to their conservation. Count leaders are known for their welcoming approach, catering to both novices and experienced birders. Joining these counts means not only enjoying the outdoors and connecting with fellow nature enthusiasts but also gathering crucial data for bird conservation.
The collected data plays a vital role in monitoring the health and status of both resident and migratory birds, aiding in the development of conservation strategies for declining species and their habitats. Moreover, the CBC serves as an educational tool for community scientists, deepening their understanding of local and migratory bird species.
In addition to general counts, some CBCs are specifically designed for children, offering an excellent avenue for young nature enthusiasts to cultivate an interest in birding and conservation.
