The City is recognizing February as Black History/Futures Month, providing an opportunity to reflect on the historical experiences of Black individuals and communities while envisioning a more inclusive future. The month highlights the contributions of Black Canadians and supports Black voices through various initiatives and community-led events.

“During Black History and Futures Month, we celebrate the enduring legacy and leadership of Black Canadians in our community and beyond,” said Vanessa Mensah, Manager of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. “From trailblazers who shaped our past to the leaders of tomorrow, we honour their contributions and commit to uplifting future generations, ensuring their stories continue to inspire and guide us all.”

Community events are being highlighted throughout the month, with the Queen’s University Equity Office compiling a shared document to centralize information about local activities. The calendar will be updated as new events are confirmed.

The Kingston Grand Theatre will host Step Afrika! on February 21. The performance integrates percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities with traditional African dances and contemporary artistic elements. Tickets are available for purchase online or at the theatre’s box office.

Last year’s Black History/Futures Month opening address, organized by Queen’s University in collaboration with community partners, remains available online. The recorded address includes reflections on the significance of the month from various community members, beginning at timestamp 16:50.

To mark the occasion, City Hall and Springer Market Square will be illuminated in red, green, and yellow on February 1 and 28. The Pan-African flag will also be raised from February 1 to 28 in recognition of Black History/Futures Month.
