Effective January 1st 2017, Kingston Transit will be changing its fare structure for the first time in three years.
The fare change is slated to help support and maintain transit operations and improvements.
The transit system – including services, routes, buses and the experience as a whole – is evolving and these changes are designed to expand service and ridership, according to Jeremy DaCosta, manager of Kingston Transit.
DaCosta added: “The fare changes will be instrumental in expanding the hours of service on Sundays and statutory holidays, introducing a new Express service on the Montreal Street corridor and increasing the frequency of our Express Routes. We set our goals high!”.
Under the new fare structure, the rates of the Affordable Transit (AT) Pass will be lowered. AT Pass holders will now receive 50 per cent off the cost of a monthly bus pass.
As well, children under the age of 12 will ride for free for a three year pilot period.
The age range for the Youth fare will be changed to 13 to 24 – compared to the current six to 18 – and will also take place for a three year pilot period.
To take advantage of this new lower monthly rate Youth fare, individuals between 18 and 24 will need to exchange their current Adult card for a Youth card the next time they renew their monthly pass.
Passes can now be exchanged at the City Hall Payment Centre or the Cataraqui Centre.
