Nominees are being sought for the City’s annual Civic Awards, recognizing significant community contributions by outstanding Kingston residents, and you have until May 3 to submit your choice.

Nominations can be made in three Civic Award categories – Youth Volunteerism, First Capital Distinguished Citizen, and Honourable Achievement – with selected recipients receiving their awards at the Canada Day Civic Ceremony.

“We are so fortunate to have many incredible volunteers in our community. It’s a privilege for me to be able to acknowledge some these individuals and the great work they do through the annual civic awards program,” said Mayor Paterson in a release. “That’s why I’m asking all Kingstonians to send in your nominations so that we can recognize the people that help make our city the vibrant and caring community that it is.”

The Civic Award for Youth Volunteerism will also be offered as a bursary program by the City, in partnership with the United Way of KFL&A, by using some proceeds from the 2018 Kingston Penitentiary tours.

Youth Award recipients will receive a bursary as follows:

  • Grades 5-8 – $750 to be used toward a school project of their choice or design
  • Grades 9-12 – $1,500
  • Post-secondary youth (up to age 24) – $2,000

As described by the City, the Civic Award for Youth Volunteerism recognizes youth in three categories – Grades 5-8, Grades 9-12 and post-secondary youth up to age 24 – who demonstrate leadership, care and compassion and/or ability to overcome personal challenges, motivate others or use special skills to improve the community’s quality of life.

The First Capital Distinguished Citizen/Honourable Achievement Award recognizes volunteers of all ages for their community contributions.

The First Capital Distinguished Citizen Awards recognize a lifetime of volunteer work, while the Honourable Achievement Awards recognize more specific efforts.
