City and United Way Invite Donations to Welcome Refugees

The Kingston region is expected to receive a number of the Syrian refugees coming to Canada over the next couple of months, who will join five refugee families who have recently arrived.

The City of Kingston has joined with the United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington in creating a fund designated to accept financial donations to be used for the cost of welcoming and integrating the new arrivals into our community.

“The Kingston community has a proven interest in helping these families and individuals who have had to flee their homes,” said Mayor Bryan Paterson. “Let’s support them and make them feel welcome here in their time of need.”

Since there are no administrative costs for this “KFLA Refugee Fund”, 100% of donations will be used to assist these families with the basic items they will need to settle in our community.

Tthe local refugee coordinating committee will distribute the funds in a manner that meets the specific needs of each family, so financial contributions are being requested rather than the donation of items such as clothing and furniture.

Everyone interested in donating can make their contribution securely online at unitedwaykfla.ca/refugeerelief.

Organizations or groups interested in sponsoring a family can contact Kingston Community Health Centre’s immigrant services by emailing refugee@kchc.ca or calling 613-544-4661 for more information.
