Kingston Police reported today that a 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged with a number of offenses related to the April 1st theft and killing of a cat in the city’s west end.
According to the release, a cat was reported to have been taken from its owner’s property – located near the corner of Collins Bay Road and Taylor-Kidd Boulevard (map) – where it had been tied with a leash.
The owner reported it missing and distributed flyers in the area, leading to a neighbour subsequently reporting that they had observed a suspicious male in the vicinity around that time. Police have also reported that some feline-related property and remains were found in a nearby park.
Following a police investigation, it was determined that reasonable and probably grounds existed to charge Paul Alexander Schwindt with Killing an Animal, Causing Unnecessary Suffering to an Animal, Theft Under $5,000, and Breach of Officer-in-Charge Undertaking.
Schwindt was arrested on April 22nd and taken to the Kingston Police station where he was held overnight and appeared at a bail hearing the next day.
He was released by the courts on strict conditions that included not attending any parks and to not leave his residence or be in the presence of any animals unless with his surety.
