Kingston Fire & Rescue will host two open houses during Fire Prevention Week (October 7 to 13) featuring pancake breakfasts, fire station and fire truck tours, and fire safety and prevention displays. The open houses will be on:

9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Station #3, 211 Gore Rd.
9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 13 at Station #7, 905 Woodbine Road.
This open house will also host a Junior Firefighter Challenge

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme across North America is “Have 2 Ways Out.”

“This year’s key message is for all residents to take responsibility for fire safety in their own homes and have two ways out of all rooms and areas,” says Fire Inspector Tracey LeBlanc.

“Fires are growing bigger and moving faster because of the volume of man-made products in homes. Common items, such as upholstered furniture, carpeting, plastic, and toys all contribute to intense fires,” she warns. LeBlanc notes that the leading cause of residential fires in Ontario is unattended cooking and urges people to stay in the kitchen while they cook.

She encourages families to develop and practice a fire escape plan during Fire Prevention Week. The plan should determine who will be responsible for young children, older adults and others who may require assistance when creating your home fire escape plan for your household.

“Practice regularly so that everyone knows what to do when the smoke alarm sounds,” she says. She also encourages residents to test their smoke alarms monthly and change the batteries when you change your clocks. It’s the law in Ontario to have working smoke alarms on every storey of a home and outside all sleeping areas.

In addition to the open houses, a number of retail Fire Safety Education Displays will be set up:

10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Cataraqui Centre
2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Canadian Tire — Cataraqui
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Home Depot
