How You Doin’?: Info On The Big Tablet Companies

Monday: Earnings reports are in for many of the big tablet producing companies like RIM, Nokia, Google, Apple, LG, Samsung, Sony, and HTC. RIM, makers of the BlackBerry Playbook line of devices is hopeful for the future but warns the next few quarters will be rough. Nokia’s net loss quadrupled (I’m no expert, but that sounds bad), while not currently in the Tablet game Nokia is rumoured to be launching a Windows 8 tablet by Q4. Google’s doing great, same for Apple and their rival Samsung. LG’s mobile phone division reported a loss. Speaking of LG I think Asus and LG should get together and make a tablet – with the Asus Transformer Prime and the LG Optimus Pad combined they could make the LG Asus Transformer Optimus Prime Pad (which is also a Truck). Sony is doing OK after taking full ownership of their Mobile division from LM Ericsson. HTC reported a 58% drop in profit which leads me to believe HTC actually stands for Hard To Compete.

A Microsoft Surface Tablet for under $200?

Tuesday: The word on the street (and by street I mean internet) is that Microsoft might release it’s new line of Surface starting at $199. With the Kindle Fire, BlackBerry Playbook, Nook Tablet and Googe’s Nexus 7 all priced around $199 this seems to be a hot price point for vendors. Even Apple might release a smaller iPad for around this price which would heat up the competition even more! Want hear something crazy? These $200 tablets are faster than the $16,000,000 Cray-2 Super Computer was in 1985. Crazy!

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet: Return of the Stylus!

Wednesday: Remember the 90s? Grunge music, Friends on TV, dial-up internet and the ever present stylus. The 00s ushered in the slow death of the stylus. But Samsung, in what might be considered a Hipster manoeuvre, has brought back stylus functionality with the Galaxy Note 10.1. As a bit of a hobby artist I welcome this trend and hope it catches on. The Note seems to be a strong entry into the Tablet market by Samsung…

Lenovo Slings Mud at Microsoft

Thursday: In a move reminiscent of a High School cafeteria scuffle Lenovo CEO said “They (Microsoft) are strong in the software, but I don’t believe they can provide the best hardware in the world. Lenovo can. Although we don’t like Microsoft providing the hardware, but even though they are starting this hardware business, we think for us that just adds one more competitor. We are still confident in ourselves. We are providing much better hardware than our competitors including Microsoft.” – but then again, what did I expect? Glowing recommendations for a competitor? That would be refreshing, but ultimately self-defeating. Let’s see what happens when the Surface comes out. It will either make a splash or a drip.

Pat Yourself on the Back, Apple!

Friday: How much world wide market-share does Apple have? 50%? 60%? No way, that’s insane, in such a huge and competitive market Apple CAN’T have 60%!! Well… that’s right… they have 70! According to analyst firm IHS iSuppli, Apple “remains the king of all media tablets,” having shipped 17 million iPads during the second quarter! Apple seems like it’s taking the meat and leaving the other Tablet makers the bone. I wonder if anyone will be able to dethrone Apple in this market. My magic 8 ball says “All signs point to hell no”. Best of luck to the competition in the coming months. We’ll keep you up to date!
