Kingston-Based Program to Empower Women and Save Children in Haiti

Published on: 2013/07/11 - in Featured Releases

With the highest infant mortality rate in the western Hemisphere, 1 in 10 children born in Haiti will not see their 5th birthday. Kingstonians Tammy Babcock and Aaron Sousa will be helping to ensure newborns see their 5th birthday (and beyond) through training new mothers in emergency first aid and CPR.

Over the next two weeks the pair, with support from Help Tammy Help Haiti (founded by Babcock in 2008) and St. John Ambulance, plan to train at least 100 women from the poorest areas of Port-au-Prince, Haiti in simple lifesaving skills.

The training will be run out of medical clinic (pictured) located in the heart of Cité Soleil, one of the poorest areas of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.

The clinic was built by Help Tammy Help Haiti, a Kingston-based charity founded by Babcock in 2008. In addition to the building of a medical clinic, Help Tammy Help Haiti has also built a water tower and is in the process of fundraising to build a community centre.

Babcock is a multi-award winning humanitarian and was recently recognized by the City of Kingston, receiving the ‘2013 First Capital Honourable Achievement Award’ on Canada Day at City Hall.

She will be working with Aaron Sousa, a long-time first aid and CPR instructor with St. John Ambulance. St. John Ambulance has helped sponsor this trip by providing $3000 worth of training manikins and first aid supplies.
