On April 18, a Prince Edward County’s cheese company was awarded their second major national award at the prestigious Canadian Cheese Grand Prix event in Montreal.

At that event, The Black River Cheese Company’s 5 Year Naturally Aged Cheddar was awarded as Canada’s Best Aged Cheddar in the 3 Year and Older category.

This was the second time the company, which is located just south west of Picton, has participated in the event which takes place every two years. On their first entry in 2011, they won for the Best Mild Cheddar in Canada while their Medium Cheddar placed as a finalist that year.

General Manager, Robin Ferguson said “We are thrilled once again to have garnered such an honour, especially considering the caliber of our fellow competitors from across Canada. As a small artisan cheese producer, this type of recognition gives credence to our belief in maintaining the standards that company was founded upon 112 years ago – handcrafted cheese using only 100% pure milk.”

The Canadian Cheese Grand Prix is the country’s premier cheese competition, with two hundred and twenty five entries competing in only 19 cheese categories that are evaluated according the international world cheese standards.

The event is sponsored by the Dairy Farmers of Canada with a panel of top Canadian food industry experts judging entries for flavour and texture with the criteria that they must be made with 100% pure Canadian milk and milk products.

The farmer-owned Black River Cheese Company Ltd is one of the oldest Cheddar factories in Canada who still age their cheddar naturally, using only pure milk from Prince Edward County dairies with no modified milk ingredients or artificial preservatives.

“Having won this award for our 5 Year Cheddar attests to our commitment to our customers to continually produce consistent quality, handcrafted cheese for all to enjoy,” said General Manager, Robin Ferguson.

You can sample their award winning cheese yourself by visiting their factory retail outlet in Milford, or see them at the 3rd Annual Great Canadian Cheese Festival being hosted at Prince Edward County Fairgrounds on June 1st and 2nd.
