Original Music from the CBC and Netflix series Anne with an “E” -including “Ahead by a Century” performed by Kingston’s The Tragically Hip and score from the composing duo of Amin Bhatia and Ari Posner – will be released digitally on December 27th, 2019 exclusively from Varèse Sarabande Records.
A CD version of the soundtrack will release on January 24th, 2020, and is now available for pre-order on VareseSarabande.com and other retailers.
Set in the late 1890s on Prince Edward Island, the series is a reimagining of the classic L. M. Montgomery book, Anne of Green Gables. It’s a coming-of-age story about a young orphan who is seeking love, acceptance and her place in the world and stars actress Amybeth McNulty in the title role. It can be viewed online for free in Canada on CBC Gem.
The soundtrack comes just as the series finishes airing its third season on CBC in Canada and prior to that season returning to Netflix internationally in January 2020.
It was recently announced that Anne with an “E” will not return for a fourth season, sparking calls for its return to trend repeatedly on social media – most often with the hashtags #RenewAnneWithanE and #SaveAnneWithAnE.
The Hip’s “Ahead by a Century” – the first single from band’s fifth studio album, Trouble at the Henhouse – has played over the show’s opening credits since premiering on CBC on March 19th, 2017.
“A period piece though it may be, the stories in Anne with an “E” are universal and timeless. Every detail, including the costumes and sets, the writing, the acting and even the live instruments in our score are incredibly accurate to the time. Yet a contemporary light shines on the issues that these characters would have faced back then, issues that are old as time and still as true and meaningful today,” said composers Bhatia and Posner. “In that sense, much like the Tragically Hip’s main title song “Ahead by a Century”, we have always felt that the whole concept behind the show was exactly that.”
Miranda de Pencier – Executive Producer of Anne with an “E” and President of Northwood Entertainment – echoed their sentiments regarding the Kingston band, saying “I’m also grateful to The Tragically Hip for lending their important and seminal song, “Ahead By A Century” to our credit sequence and to this stunning soundtrack”.
